Outdoor Renovations In Melbourne
Outdoor work is where a renovation either connects to the garden or doesn't. Decking, paving, alfresco areas and the landscaping that ties them together, built to the same standard as the house. Most run 4 to 10 weeks.
What an outdoor renovation involves
Decking, paving, retaining walls, alfresco areas and outdoor kitchens. Where the work meets the house we resolve the levels properly, so the threshold between inside and out is flush rather than a step down onto something that ponds every winter.
Drainage decides whether outdoor work lasts. Falls, subsurface drainage and the transition at the building line all have to be right, and all of it is invisible the moment the paving goes down. It's the same principle as waterproofing a bathroom - the part you can't see is the part that fails.
We take these on as part of a larger renovation and as standalone work, but we're not a landscaping-only outfit and we're not the right call for a garden tidy-up.
Can you see the garden from anywhere you actually sit?
A lot of outdoor projects are really an inside problem. The deck gets built, the landscaping goes in, and the garden still goes unused - because there's no living space that looks onto it and no easy way out to it.

Questions
Do I need a permit for a deck or pergola?
It depends on height, size and how close it sits to a boundary. Low decks often don't; anything raised, roofed or near a fence usually does. We'll tell you which applies before you spend anything on design.
Can you do the landscaping as well as the building work?
Yes - paving, retaining, planting and irrigation, coordinated with the built work so the levels and drainage resolve as one job rather than two trades blaming each other.
Why does drainage keep coming up?
Because it's what fails. Water sitting against a building line rots timber, lifts paving and finds its way inside. Getting falls and subsurface drainage right costs very little at the time and a great deal to retrofit.
Will this work with an extension later?
If an extension is on the horizon, tell us now. Building the outdoor work first and demolishing part of it in two years is a common and expensive sequence, and it's avoidable with one conversation.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes - registered building practitioner with full public liability and domestic building insurance. Our work carries a structural warranty.
