Interior Home Renovations In Melbourne

Interior renovation is what you do when the house is sound but the way it works isn't. Reconfigured layouts, new joinery, flooring and finishes across multiple rooms. Most run 2 to 4 months.

What an interior renovation involves

We take on internal work across multiple rooms - living areas, bedrooms, hallways and storage. That usually means new flooring, new joinery, replastering and painting, and relocating power and lighting to suit how the rooms are actually used rather than how they were wired in 1960.

Where a wall needs to come out to make a layout work, that's structural and we treat it as such: engineer, steel, and new footings if the loads call for it. It's the difference between a job that holds and a job that cracks in two years.

Room-by-room cosmetic updates - paint, new carpet, a bit of shelving - aren't what we do, and we'd rather say so now than waste your time.

If the problem is that the house feels dark and cut up

Interior renovation covers a lot of ground - and for a lot of Melbourne homes, what's actually wrong isn't the finishes. It's that the floor plan was designed for how people lived in 1935: separate rooms, narrow hallways, and the back of the house shut off from the garden.

New paint, flooring and joinery make a compartmentalised house a better-looking compartmentalised house. Removing the walls changes how it works.

Common
Questions

What counts as an interior renovation?

Work across multiple internal rooms that stops short of a whole-home project - reconfigured layouts, new joinery, flooring, lighting and finishes. If it's one room, that's a single room renovation. If it's the services and the roof as well, it's whole-home.

Do I need a permit to remove an internal wall?

If it's load-bearing, yes - and you'll need an engineer's design for the replacement structure. Non-load-bearing walls usually don't. We establish which is which before any design work, because it changes both the cost and the timeline.

Can we live in the house during the work?

Usually yes, room by room, though it's disruptive and it extends the programme. We'll price both scenarios so you can see what staying actually costs.

How is this different from an interior designer?

A designer specifies how it should look. We build it. We work alongside designers regularly and are comfortable coming in at any stage - but we don't offer design as a standalone service.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes - registered building practitioner with full public liability and domestic building insurance. Our work carries a structural warranty.

We needed to remodel the kitchen and shift the laundry into a new location as we outgrew our current kitchen. Dean and the team were extremely professional throughout the whole process. The communication was on point and the result, fantastic. Throughout the whole process we felt informed through honest, clear communication. Can't wait to use Novastri again for future renovation projects.

Brilliant, professional, amazing communication and timely - we could not have asked for more. Highly recommended. I have never seen such amazing tiling and we had difficult tiles to work with. Recommendations and ideas for the 3 bathrooms were brilliant and we are so happy with all the work Dean did for us. Thanks Dean. We have never had such a brilliant experience with renovations.

Amazing work, Dean was professional and on point with his planning. I was kept updated with all progress & developments. No unexpected surprises as the quality was maintained throughout the project. I’ll be using Novastri again for future projects. My reconstructed balconies have added increased value to the property. Thank you Novastri.
